Thank You, Swedish Conglomerate

I was at an event in Cambridge last night where about 90% of the people in attendance were not originally from Massachusetts. Noticing my distinct-but-sexy Boston gutter accent, they asked me where I grew up. Stoughton, I replied. 5 years ago if I had mentioned if I was from Stoughton I would've gotten one of the following responses:

  • Stoughton....where is that?

  • Isn't that where Alex's is?

  • Are you in a gang?

  • That's on the North Shore, right? (no, you ignorant fuck, that's StoneHAM)

  • Oh....that's how it's pronounced. I thought it was Stof-ton

  • Nowadays I get this response:

  • Wow! That's where Ikea is!

  • Hey, whatever draws the tourists in....

I'm old enough to remember when Rt138 in stoughton was a tree lined road. It's also famous for Alex's - I spent some time there in the 80's on amature night tuesdays. There was also a club/bar across from Alex's that used to have great bands there on the weekends. I can't recall the name right now. I was a city kid who used to drive out to the country/stoughton to get entertained. I'm also OLD enough to have come of age when the drinking age was 18.
