Offspring

Back in my former life as a drummer, I used to love putting on my headphones and banging a 5-piece Gretsch to tunes released in the mid to late 1990's. One of my favorite bands from that era, the Offspring, has a special place in my heart to this date. Unlike other popular bands of the era like Oasis and Red Hot Chili Peppers, the core sound of Offspring remains true to their grunge/alternative roots. Their newer releases sound like they could've been released a decade ago.

You're Gonnna Go Far Kid has been stuck in my head for the last three days. While I give them a pass for Pretty Fly For A White Guy, the rest of their songs should *all* be included in a greatest hit list. However, if I had to choose my top 5 favorite Offspring songs, they would be:

5. Get A Job
4. Self Esteem
3. Come Out and Play
2. You're Gonna Go Far Kid
1. The Kids Aren't Alright

Our parents had bands that defined their generation, and I think that Offspring is absolutely one of those bands that defines ours. The Offspring may be under-rated, but they are among an elite group of bands that manage to release hit singles and pack concert halls (I'd argue that Dave Matthews, Chili Peppers, and Mary J Blige belong in that group as well). Offspring TV has it's own channel on You Tube - check it out.
