I wrote last week about how excited I was about the arrival of my new Verizon FiOS service. Aside from saving money, I was hoodwinked into thinking that I would receive a superior product. The Verizon salesman scheduled me for an install this morning between 8am to noon so I adjusted my schedule accordingly. When I received an e-mail reminder I figured that these guys were really on top of their game.
Like it does everyday, noon rolled around and there was no sign of Verizon man. I naturally assumed he was just running a few minutes behind but just to make sure, I called Verizon at 12:30 to follow up. I was told by the lady at the other end of the phone that the tech was near my house. So close in fact, that she wouldn't be surprised if he was at my door by the time I hung up my phone.
1:20 comes and goes and there is still no sign of a living, breathing Verizon tech as far as the eye can see. I called the customer service number again and was breathlessly told by another rep that the tech was actually on my property working furiously to install my FiOS. I requested that the tech call me directly because I couldn't understand why a utility worker would start working on my unit without announcing their presence. After playing a riveting round of hide-and-go-seek with the Verizon man, I realized that I was being flat out lied to.
At 2pm, with no Verizon guy in sight, I figured it was time to call to cancel the installation. I had just hung up with the local Verizon office and when lo and behold - John From Verizon comes aknockin' on pahkcah02's door. Without offering to apologize he explained that he hasn't gotten the installation ticket until well after lunch. I thanked him for his time and asked him to leave.
After jumping through hoops with Verizon, they offered me a huge savings (about $60/month) over my current Comcast bill. While I could certainly stand to pocket $720 a year, I absolutely refuse to do business with people who are not honest with me. Comcast may be slow, dull, and expensive compared to Verizon, but at least they have never flat out lied to me in order to make up for incompetence. Buyer beware to anyone considering the switch.

Wow. Sher you redefine the term of not playing games. Stand that ground sister cable.
I am relieved that you decided not to get Fios. Topic of conversation today in the teachers' lounge: how much Verizon sucks. Everyone at the table (and there were five of us) had a Verizon horror story. In fact, the special ed teacher flat out told them: "get this s**t out of my house and understand that my billing cycle ends today." You've made me a very happy twin :)
I am psyched to have come across this post. I have been trying to switch to Verizon for some time now but can't seem to convince them that Allston is NOT Newtown. The customer service people tell me that they do indeed service Allston, and am I sure that I have the zip code right? Is the building I live in new? Do you know anyone else in your building who had Verizon?
I've called a few times, and was going to sign up online. I could really stand to save the $50/month but I'm not sure it's worth it. (It would be just regular cable-Fios isn't in my area yet apparently.)
I recently got on live chat with Comcast to figure out what they had done to my personal website. Not only did they come up with the information I needed to fix it, but they admitted it was their fault in the first place and apologized.
Verizon? Don't get me started.
I am so glad to have come across this post.
I am sorry that you have gone through this, but glad to know that I am not alone.
I have had absolutely horrible problems with Verizon and they are not even over yet because I can't even get a human being after all of the lies and abuse they have put me through.
Now they keep sending bills for amounts I don't owe, but when I try to login to pay, they say my account has changed so I can't login... amongst other things.
Did I mention that the FIOS guy (even though the rep said there is no FIOS guy because FIOS isn't available in my area, even though I have an ad right here that says it is...) kept coming in and out of my apartment (after having "left") and then barged straight into my bedroom??!!! Trust me, there are no Verizon hookups in there.
