Confessions of a Coupon Clipper

Until recently, it never really dawned on me to actually read the Sunday circulars. I'm not that brand loyal to begin with, plus I generally do not feel compelled to buy 2 or more of the same name brand item just to save 35c. Every once in a while Shaws or Big Y will send me $5/off coupons, which I'll tend to use. Otherwise, as far as I was concerned, tearing through circulars for 10c off coupons was an activity strictly reserved for Midwestern housewives and seniors who lived through the Depression.

After reading one doomsday economy story after another, I sat down yesterday with my paper and actually went through the coupon section. The only thing of real interest was a $1 off face wash. I needed face wash anyhow so that seemed like a pretty good deal. Unbeknownst to me the Walgreens flyer turned out to be the real hidden treasure of this week's Sunday Herald. Walgreens is having a massive sale on school supplies this week and since the Troll teaches in an urban district I figured that this would be a good opportunity to help stock her classroom. Allow for me to share my bargains:

10 pack of pencils x 5
10 pack of ballpoint pens x 2
2 pocket folders x 5
10 pack mechanical pencils x 4
100 pack of index cards x 2
Poster Board x 4
150 sheet pack of loose leaf paper x 2
2 pack of pink erasers x 4
6 pack of highlighters x 2
4 rolls of Angel Soft (for me) x 2

Total without Walgreens coupons: $51.05
Price with Walgreens coupons: $7.25
Total Savings: $43.80

Truth be told I love the Troll and all of her escuela hijos, but I probably wouldn't have spent almost $50 to trick her room out with highlighters and mechanical pencils. However, with my mitzvah (good deed) for the week fulfilled, I can now concentrate on being slightly more evil over the next few days without feeling guilty about it.

If you missed yesterday's paper you can do a mitzvah for an educator even if the phrase "coupon clipper" is not in your vocabulary. Walgreens generally stacks their weekly flyer in the front of the store and near the pharmacy counter.
